ASHBURN, Va., March 2 (UPI) -- The Redskins have released veteran defensive end Jason Taylor after just one injury-plagued season in Washington.
Taylor was acquired in a trade with Miami in exchange for Washington's second-round selection in 2009 and sixth-round pick in 2010.
The 12-year veteran suffered a knee injury in pre-season and later battled a calf injury that cost the former Defensive Player of the Year three games during the season. Taylor's 29 tackles last season were a career low and his 3 1/2 sacks were the second-lowest total of his career.
Taylor apparently declined a request by Washington to add a clause to his contract requiring him to participate in 25 of 39 days in the team's off-season workout program. Taylor would have cost the Redskins $8 million against the cap in 2009.
Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, has 120 1/2 career sacks, 14th on the NFL all-time list. His career totals also include 482 tackles and seven interceptions.
