NEW YORK, March 1 (UPI) -- The NHL Sunday suspended Dallas forward Steve Ott under an "attempt to injure" rule because of his actions in an altercation immediately after a game.
Ott was assessed a match penalty for an alleged eye-gouging in an encounter with Anaheim forward Travis Moen after the final buzzer in a 4-3 loss to the Ducks Saturday.
The NHL said the penalty was assessed under Rule 21.1 -- "attempt to injure."
Ott was suspended indefinitely pending a hearing.
"It was an accident. I didn't mean to do it," Ott said in a report in The Dallas Morning News.
Moen was upset by the incident, the newspaper reported.
"You don't like it when a guy eye-gouges you after a fight," Moen said. "You know, I guess he felt he had to eye-gouge me. I don't know. Maybe it wasn't intentional. Maybe he was just trying to get at me, and was pulling, and got my eye or whatever."
