Nalbandian eliminated in Acapulco

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Qualifier Daniel Koellerer pulled off a stunning upset Tuesday, defeating top-seeded David Nalbandian in the first round of the $1.2 million Mexican Open.

After Nalbandian handily won the opening set 6-1, the unheralded Austrian came back to knock off the Argentine star 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

In other opening action on Acapulco's red clay courts, third-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated countryman Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Robredo is seeking his third title in three weeks.

Second-seeded Gael Monfils claimed a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over French countryman Olivier Patience.

Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the No. 4 seed and defending Acapulco champion, breezed by Mexican wild card Santiago Gonzalez 6-4-6-2, while fifth-seeded Argentine Jose Acasuso bested countryman Brian Dabul 6-3, 7-5.

Seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers ousted Italian Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 and eighth-seeded Carlos Moya, a two-time winner here, held off fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.

Additional opening-round wins came for Spaniard Alberto Martin and American Kevin Kim.

The 2009 Acapulco champion will pocket $300,000.
