TORONTO, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Nikolai Kulemin produced the only shootout goal Wednesday and Toronto spoiled the coaching debut of John Tortorella in downing the New York Rangers 2-1.
The Rangers' recent woes cost Tom Renney his job Monday and their fortunes were no better with Tortorella behind the bench. New York lost for the 11th time in 13 games.
After a hot start to the season, the Rangers are clinging to the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto's lone regulation goal came from Niklas Hagman, who scored the overtime winner Sunday against the Rangers in the opener of the home-and-home series. Vesa Toskala stopped 31 shots to get the win.
Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves for the Rangers and allowed the game-winner when Kulemin snapped off a shot that eluded the goalie's blocker in the first round of the shootout.
