Querrey wins in Delray Beach first round

DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- American Sam Querrey was a first-round winner at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Monday, beating Argentine Guillermo Canas 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

In an upset, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat fifth-seeded Belgian Steve Darcis 6-3, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Frenchman Florent Serra avoided an upset by beating Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

In other opening-round play, Austrian Stefan Koubek defeated American Bobby Reynolds 6-4, 6-3; Belgian Christophe Rochus beat Croat Roko Karanusic 6-3, 6-4; and American Robert Kendrick beat Chile's Paul Capdeville of Chile, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The top seed is American Mardy Fish. In last year's final, Japan's Kei Nishikori upset American favorite James Blake.
