GLENDALE, Ariz., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Daniel Carcillo's goal in the eighth round of the shootout Thursday night finally gave the Phoenix Coyotes a 4-3 win over Atlanta.
Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen and the Coyotes' Mikael Tellqvist allowed one goal each during the first seven rounds of the marathon shootout before Carcillo slid a backhander between the legs of the Thrashers' goaltender.
Phoenix halted a three-game losing streak, coming up with regulation goals from Joakim Lindstrom, Viktor Tikhonov and Steven Goertzen.
Atlanta overcame a 3-1 deficit and forced overtime when Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 30th goal of the season with 53 seconds left in regulation.
These teams met for the first time since Jan. 5, 2007.
