SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller died in Salt Lake City Friday following a lengthy fight against type 2 diabetes, the team said. He was 64.

In a brief statement, the Jazz said Miller was surrounded by family at his home when he died.

Miller owned the NBA franchise for the last 23 years. He also founded Larry H. Miller Charities, a foundation funded by monthly contributions from his business ventures.

"Larry and (wife) Gail have always stressed the importance of giving back to the communities in which we do business," said Greg Miller, Larry Miller's eldest son and chief executive officer of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies.

Larry Miller's health had declined steeply after a heart attack in June 2008. He had to have both legs amputated below the knee last month because of complications from the disease.
