MARANA, Ariz., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods said on his Web site Thursday he will compete for the first time this season at next week's Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz.

Woods has not played since he beat Rocco Mediate in an 18-hole playoff last June at the U.S. Open in La Jolla, Calif. Later that week, he admitted he played in pain the entire event because of a left-knee injury.

That ailment led to reconstructive surgery on his left leg.

Woods' decision to return to competition comes after his wife, Elin, gave birth to the couple's second child Feb. 8.

"Elin and our new son, Charlie, are doing great," he said. "I've enjoyed my time at home with the family and appreciate everyone's support and kind wishes (but) I'm now ready to play again."

Despite his absence, Woods retained the top spot in the latest world rankings released Monday.
