NASHVILLE, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has decided to become a free agent before signing another NFL contract, the Tennessean reported.
His agent, Chad Speck, told the newspaper that Haynesworth has been unable to make progress in his efforts to secure a long-term deal during offseason contract negotiations with Tennessee.
The mammoth 6-foot-6, 320-pound Haynesworth, a two-time All-Pro, led the Titans last season with 8 1/2 sacks among 51 total tackles (41 solo), and was their franchise player in 2008.
"I guess I thought it would be a little faster since free agency is coming up here, but they're taking their time," the Hartsville, S.C., native told the newspaper during Super Bowl week. "We'll see how it plays out."
The Titans retain exclusive rights to negotiate with the former University of Tennessee All-American until next Friday, when the veteran free agency signing period begins.
In 90 NFL contests, Haynesworth has compiled 271 tackles and 24 sacks.
