Report: Leach to stay at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Texas Tech football Coach Mike Leach reportedly reached an agreement with the school Thursday to extend his contract through the 2013 season.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported the five-year contract was worth $12.7 million.

Leach, who has built a national reputation as an offensive guru, had balked at signing a new contract after the school inserted clauses that he felt would limit his opportunity to take another job or to make outside money for speaking engagements.

The negotiations broke down to the point that there had been reports the Texas Tech board of regents would consider dismissing Leach. He had two years remaining on his previous contract.

The newspaper reported Leach met with Chancellor Kent Hance Thursday and that Leach received concessions in the new contract. The deal reportedly has no buyout clause, meaning Leach would not owe the school any money if he leaves to take another job.

Leach must notify Texas Tech if he plans to interview for another post, the report said. Leach will also retain the rights to any income from books or national speaking engagements.

Leach, 47, coached the Red Raiders to an 11-2 record in 2008 after a 10-0 start. He has compiled a 76-39 mark in nine seasons and is seven wins short of becoming the school's all-time winningest coach.
