Nalbandian reaches Buenos Aires quarters

BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed David Nalbandian reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Telmex Wednesday by downing Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 6-2.

Nalbandian set up a quarterfinal match with Juan Carlos Ferrero, who had to rally before downing Marcel Granollers 6-7 (7-9), 6-0, 6-3.

Qualifier Franco Ferreiro also moved into the quarters on the clay courts of the Buenos Aires Tennis Club with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Pablo Cuevas.

Jose Acasuso, who fell to Nalbandian in the finals of this event last year, will play a second-round match Thursday against Fabio Fognini. Juan Monaco, who won here two years ago, will meet Martin Vassallo.
