Bears' Tait considers retirement

CHICAGO, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Chicago Bears offensive tackle John Tait is seriously considering retirement, which would leave the team with one player at the position, sources say.

Tait might not return next season despite having one year left on his contract, unnamed sources told the Chicago Sun-Times. His departure would leave the Bears with only one tackle under contract: 2008 first-round pick Chris Williams, who has yet to start a game after having disc surgery on his back last August, the newspaper said.

Tait came to the Bears from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004 after signing a six-year, $33 million contract.

The team also announced it would not offer a contract extension to safety Mike Brown, considered one of the best natural leaders on the team since its 1986 Super Bowl appearance. Agent Ethan Lock said Brown, who started 15 games last season before being put on injured reserve with a calf injury, would seek to continue his NFL career, the Sun-Times reported.
