COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Rookie Steve Mason returned from an illness and made 32 saves Friday, leading the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 victory over Detroit.
The 20-year-old Mason, who has recorded a league-leading seven shutouts in his first NHL season, was diagnosed with mononucleosis Jan. 29 and missed three games while recovering.
He battled Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood to a standoff through 2 ½ periods before Jason Williams put a slapshot past Osgood with 6:55 to play for the game-winner.
Raffi Torres and Jason Chimera also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won three in a row.
Detroit, which lost for the first time in February, got goals from Nicklas Lidstrom and Mikael Samuelsson. Osgood stopped 22-of-25 shots.
The Red Wings and Blue Jackets have split their four games this season.
