COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Frederico Gil won two tiebreaks and surprised defending champion Nicolas Almagro in Thursday's quarterfinals at the Brazil Open.

Almagro, the tournament's top seed, fell 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).

Gil will meet Thomaz Bellucci in the semifinals after Bellucci eliminated Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-3.

Tommy Robredo, seeded second, recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alberto Martin. His semifinal opponent will be Jose Acasuso, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Eduardo Schwank.

Acasuso will be trying to reach his second title match in as many weeks. He fell to Fernando Gonzalez in the championship match in Chile last week.
