Dushevina posts upset in Thailand

PATTAYA CITY, Thailand, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Vera Dushevina ousted fourth-seeded Sybille Bammer in straight sets Wednesday in second-round play of the $220,000 Pattaya Open tennis tournament in Thailand.

Dushevina had a clear advantage on her first serve, winning 71 percent of those points, in a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Bammer had her serve broken in half of her 10 service games.

In another second-round match fifth-seeded Peng Shuai stopped Galina Voskoboeva 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.

The first round was completed Wednesday and three seeded players advanced. No. 6 Tamarine Tanasugarn, a local favorite, defeated Akgul Amanmuradova 6-2, 7-6 (7-4); seventh-seeded Shahar Peer whipped Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-1, 6-0, and eighth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova got by Kimiko Dare Krumm 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Also, Vitalia Diatchenko stopped Ryoko Fuda 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Fuda was a replacement for third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova, who withdrew due to illness.

The tournament continues through Sunday with the titlist collecting a check for $37,000.
