Almagro, Robredo reach Brazil quarters

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Defending champion Nicolas Almagro and No. 2 seed Tommy Robredo led the way into the quarterfinals Wednesday at the Brazil Open.

Almagro, seeded first in the event, got past Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4, 6-4, setting up a meeting with Federico Gil.

Robredo earned his quarterfinal berth with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Fabio Fognini. Robredo will take on Alberto Martin.

Gil was an upset winner over fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, and Martin ousted No. 7 seed Nicolas Devilder 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

Elsewhere in the second round, Jose Acasuso defeated Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2, and Edwaurdo Schwank outlasted Rui Machado 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6). Acasuso was the runner-up last week in Chile.
