Kanepi beats seventh-seeded Garriguez

PARIS, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Estonia's Kaia Kanepi beat seventh-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues Monday the $700,000 Open GDF SUEZ in Paris.

Kanepi defeated Medina Garrigues 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated France's Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-1 and Chinese Li Na advanced by besting 2008 Paris runner-up Agnes Szavay 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Szavay, of Hungary, lost to Russian Anna Chakvetadze in last year's finale.

This week's top seeds are world No. 1 Australian Open and U.S. Open champion Serena Williams, former top-ranked Jelena Jankovic and Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva. Williams will open against Czech Iveta Benesova, U.S. Open runner-up Jankovic will play Italian Francesca Schiavone and Dementieva will play Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
