ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Dwight Howard had 30 points Sunday to lead the Orlando Magic to a 101-84 win over New Jersey.
The Magic sprinted to a 14-point lead (32-18) after the first period Sunday and never looked back, maintaining a double-digit cushion for most of the contest until New Jersey closed to 88-79 on a 3-pointer by Jarvis Hayes with 5:00 left in the contest.
Howard, who also pulled down 16 rebounds, sank a free throw to put the Magic out of danger.
Mickael Pietrus scored 17 points, Hedo Turkoglu had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Rashard Lewis added 14 points in the Magic's fifth win in their last seven contests.
Devin Harris led New Jersey with 28 points and 12 assists. Brook Lopez scored 19 with 12 rebounds, while Hayes added 13 points for the Nets -- whose leading scorer, Vince Carter, was out after suffering a hyper-extended right elbow in Saturday's 114-70 rout of the Denver Nuggets.
