NEW YORK, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Jerry Smith's game-high 21 points off the bench Sunday fueled seventh-ranked Louisville in its sluggish 60-47 Big East win over Saint John's.

Louisville trailed 22-19 at halftime, but after tying the game up at 34-34 went on an 11-2 run, capped by Smith's 3-pointer and one free throw, for a 45-38 edge with 6:21 remaining.

After using solid defense, the lead grew gradually until the end.

Earl Clark, the only other player in double figures, scored 12 points with eight rebounds for the Cardinals (18-4, 9-1), who bounced back from their 68-51 loss to top-ranked Connecticut last Monday.

Sean Evans led SJU with 12 points and nine rebounds.

D.J. Kennedy and Justin Burrell scored 10 points apiece for the Red Storm (12-11, 3-8), who have lost seven times in their last nine contests, and four of their last five against the Cardinals.
