TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Dominique Jones scored the winning points with 16 seconds left Friday and South Florida survived a frantic finish to stun No. 8 Marquette 57-56.
Marquette had a 12-game winning streak snapped and the Golden Eagles fell out of the lead in the Big East Conference.
South Florida owned a 10-point advantage in the first half, but the contest was close throughout the second period, and the Golden Eagles took a 56-55 lead with 1:14 to play on a free throw by Jerel McNeal.
Jones missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw chance with 54 seconds remaining, but his layup at the 16-second mark put the Bulls in front.
Marquette missed two excellent chances to win the game in the final seconds when Wesley Matthews misfired on a layup attempt and Lazar Hayward failed on a tip-in chance.
Jesus Verdejo led South Florida (8-14, 3-7 Big East) with 21 points and Jones had 15.
McNeal scored 22 for Marquette (22-3, 9-1).
Connecticut assumed the lead in the Big East at 10-1 and Louisville is third at 8-1.
