WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the third period Saturday, leading the Washington Capitals' 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

With the contest tied, 2-2, after two periods, the NHL's reigning MVP scored his 32nd second goal this season to put Washington up, 3-2, with 12:52 left.

At 14:08, he scored his 33rd (power play) to cap the scoring.

Viktor Kozlov (11) and Mike Green (14) both scored once with one assist each.

Nicklas Backstrom had two assists, while goaltender Jose Theodore made 27 saves on 29 shots for the Capitals, who snapped a two-game skid and also broke their three-game home losing streak against Detroit.

Detroit's Ville Leino (1) and Johan Franzen (22, power play) both scored once, with Leino's goal coming in his NHL debut.

Goalie Ty Conklin was beaten four times in 27 shots for the Central Division-leading Red Wings, whose losing streak grew to a season-high five games in a row.
