Mike Nolan new Denver defense coordinator

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Denver hired former San Francisco head Coach Mike Nolan Monday to be the Broncos' defensive coordinator.

Nolan, 49, served as the 49ers' head coach for most of the last four seasons.

He will be on his second coaching stint with the Broncos -- he guided Denver's special teams and linebackers from 1987-1992. During that time he saw the "Orange Crush" advance to a pair of Super Bowls (XXII and XXIV) -- losses to the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers -- and an appearance in the 1991 AFC Championship Game.

Nolan was the New York Giants' defensive coordinator from 1993-1996, and then had that position with the Washington Redskins from 1997-1999 and the New York Jets in 2000. He was with the Baltimore Ravens' staff from 2001-2004.

Nolan has been a coach in the NFL for the past 22 seasons. He has overseen seven playoff appearances as a coach, including four post-season bids as a defensive coordinator.
