MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Sam Young scored 22 points Sunday, 16 in the second half, and fourth-ranked Pittsburgh beat Big East Conference rival West Virginia 79-67.
Young's scoring helped Pitt expand its slim 39-37 halftime advantage, but not before a three-pointer by Da'Sean Butler put WVU ahead 45-43 with 16:33 remaining. From that point, Pitt outscored the Mountaineers 36-22.
DeJuan Blair scored 16 points with 11 rebounds. Levance Fields had 13 points and five assists, while Jermaine Dixon added 11 points and four assists for the Panthers (18-1, 6-1), who forced 13 turnovers (11 steals), and shot 53.6 percent from the field.
Butler's 21 points and six rebounds led West Virginia. Alex Ruoff scored 16 with three steals, while Darryl Bryant had 12 points and six assists for the Mountaineers (14-5, 3-3), who have dropped five of the last six games in the "Backyard Brawl" series.
They shot 41.1 percent from the field, sinking just 5-of-19 three-pointers.
