Serena Williams advances in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Serena Williams moved closer to the fourth Australian Open title of her career Saturday with a third-round win over Peng Shuai.

The second-seeded Williams recorded 10 aces and capitalized on half of her 12 break-point chances to defeat Peng 6-1, 6-4.

Williams, seeking her 10th major crown, has yet to drop a set in the tournament. She will face 13th-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the Round of 16.

Azarenka advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over 2006 Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo.

In other early action Saturday, No. 21 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain defeated 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-1, Carla Suarez Navarro won over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1, 6-4 and No. 22 Jie Zheng ousted Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva closed out third-round action with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over local favorite Samantha Stosur, while eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia topped Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
