LONDON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal wants to be the captain of Europe's 2010 Ryder Cup team, the BBC reported.
Europe is set to name its golf squad captain in Dubai on Jan. 29 after delaying the decision for more than two weeks, the British broadcaster said.
Olazabal, who had hoped to qualify for the team as a player, faces competition for the captaincy from Scotland's Colin Montgomerie.
Olazabal's manager, Sergio Gomez, told the BBC Thursday the two-time Masters champion believes there are only two names under consideration.
"There are factors favoring Jose Maria and factors favoring "Monty," Gomez said.
Olazabal has played on three winning Ryder Cup teams and served as Nick Faldo's vice-captain last year.
Injuries in recent years have limited his ability to compete consistently, and a bout with rheumatism forced Olazabel to withdraw from this week's European Tour Qatar Masters golf tournament.
"He had a small problem with his wrists and forearms but it was not too severe," Gomez said.
