Report: Greek team wants Stephon Marbury

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Disgruntled New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury has drawn the interest of the owners of Olympiacos in Greece, the New York Post reported.

The newspaper said Olympiacos is offering about $15 million for Marbury's services and Knicks officials are "excited."

"I will listen to what they have to say," Marbury wrote in an e-mail to the Post on Wednesday.

Marbury told the Post of his intentions to play in Italy when his Knicks contract expired, but prefers to play in the NBA this season and has a commitment from at least one NBA team, believed to be the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics.

The 13-year NBA veteran was told by Knicks officials on Dec. 1 to stay away from the team until a buyout could be negotiated.

He refused to enter a contest against Detroit the day before he was suspended without pay.

Marbury was being paid $21.7 million in the final year of his current Knicks deal.

Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, the Knicks owner, may be willing to release Marbury if he gives back $2 million of his salary, WFAN radio reported.
