UT baseball coach suspended after arrest

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- University of Texas baseball Coach Augie Garrido has been suspended with pay after being arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Austin.

The 69-year-old all-time victories leader in NCAA Division I baseball was arrested Saturday. He was arrested after an Austin police officer noticed the Porsche Cayenne Garrido was driving did not have its headlights on, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Sunday.

The police affidavit says Garrido told the officer he had consumed five glasses of wine and was intoxicated, the newspaper reported. Garrido refused blood and breath tests.

UT men's Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds said in a statement Garrido's suspension was pending until further information can be gathered.

"This is a difficult and regrettable situation that we are taking very seriously," Dodds said. "I spoke with Coach Garrido and he's devastated and realizes he made a serious mistake. He deeply regrets putting the university in this position and will act quickly to do what's right."

Garrido is the highest-paid coach in college baseball. He received a $160,000 raise this off-season that will bring his annual salary to $800,000.
