Agoos, Fawcett join soccer Hall of Fame

ONEONTA, N.Y., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Former Major League Soccer defender Jeff Agoos and Olympic gold medalist Joy Fawcett have been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made Friday at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in Oneonta, N.Y.

"These players have distinguished themselves and soccer in the United States through outstanding careers of championships and accomplishments," Hall of Fame President Steve Baumann said. "Each has represented the United States in international competition at the highest level and earned (election to the Hall of Fame)"

Agoos, now sporting director of the New York Red Bulls, was on teams that won five MLS Cups and played in two World Cups and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He retired after the 2005 season.

Fawcett played for two Women's World Cup winners and won two Olympic Gold Medals. She was an all-star for the San Diego Spirit in the Women's United Soccer Association in 2003.

Agoos and Fawcett will be inducted in a ceremony Aug. 2 at the Hall of Fame in Oneonta.
