CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Tyler Hansbrough scored 28 points and claimed 12 rebounds Thursday to power No. 6 North Carolina past Virginia 83-61.

The Tar Heels had lost their first two Atlantic Coast Conference games, but Hansbrough helped get North Carolina back on track by setting a school record with the 67th 20-point game of his career.

Ty Lawson added 19 points and Wayne Ellington and Danny Green had 13 each for North Carolina (15-2, 1-2 ACC).

Jamil Tucker led Virginia (7-7, 1-2) with 12.

North Carolina rushed to a 14-2 lead only to have Virginia cut its deficit to 15-14. The Tar Heels eventually built a 50-36 halftime advantage and broke the game open by scoring 12 of the first 14 points in the second period.

The Cavaliers attempted 27 three-point shots and made only four.
