Chakvetadze, Szavay, Wozniak upset

HOBART, Australia, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- It was an opening day of upsets Monday at the Moorilla Hobart International in Australia with Anna Chakvetadze, Agnes Szavay and Aleksandra Wozniak all losing.

Unseeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro battled the third-seeded Chakvetadze, of Russia, to a 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5 decision. Britain's Anne Keothavong ousted out the fifth-seeded Szavay, a Hungarian, 6-3, 7-5. Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska beat sixth-seeded Wozniak, a Canadian, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta defeated Israeli Shahar Peer 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the Australian Open tune-up at the Domain Tennis Centre.

Fourth-seeded Chinese Jie Zheng avoided elimination by holding off New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

In other second-day action, Hungarian qualifier Melinda Czink, France's Virginie Razzano, Belarusian Olga Govortsova, Argentine Gisela Dulko, Italian Mara Santangelo and rising Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova all won.

The winner of this event will be paid $37,000.
