Don Meyer becomes winningest NCAA coach

ABERDEEN, S.D., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Northern State men's basketball Coach Don Meyer is now the winningest coach in NCAA history with 903 victories, one ahead of Bob Knight.

An 82-62 Saturday night win by the Wolves over the University of Mary Marauders pushed Meyer past Knight.

Meyer, 64, was in a car crash in September that resulted in the loss of part of his left leg and the discovery, during surgery, of cancer in his liver and intestines, but he kept on coaching at the Division II school in Aberdeen, S.D.

Knight, who spent most of his career at Division I Indiana followed by several years at Texas Tech, retired from coaching last season.

"He (Knight) was a great coach," Meyer said. "I'd always ask coaches in the league he was coaching in, 'Who's the best coach in your league?' They would say there's no question, it's (Knight). And coaches don't lie about that stuff."
