Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Russians Elena Dementieva and Elena Vesnina won their semifinal matches Friday and advanced to the finals of the $220,000 ASB Classic in New Zealand.
The all-Russian final of the WTA Tour season opener will pit the experienced veteran and No. 1 seed Dementieva, 27, against the 22-year-old Vesnina, who will be playing in her first final.
The two have met once before with Dementieva beating Vesnina in three sets in a 2006 match in The Netherlands.
Vesnina outlasted Britain's Anne Keothavong 6-7, (3-7), 6-1, 7-5 on Friday. Dementieva, ranked No. 4 in the world, dispatched Aravane Rezai of France 6-2, 6-2.
