MIAMI, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The Oklahoma Sooners and Florida Gators, both quarterbacked by a Heisman Trophy winner, will determine the championship of major college football Thursday.
Both teams will bring a 12-1 record into the 11th BCS title contest and both will be trying for their second national crown since the NCAA embarked on its attempt to identify an undisputed champion.
Oklahoma will be led by Sam Bradford, who during the regular season threw for 48 touchdowns and was intercepted only six times. He averaged 10 yards per attempt.
Bradford was named this season's Heisman Trophy winner last month, following in the footsteps of Florida's Tim Tebow. Although he failed in his bid to win back-to-back Heismans, Tebow produced 28 touchdown passes and was intercepted just twice. He also scored 12 times running the ball and totaled 564 rushing yards.
Since suffering its lone loss of the year to Texas in October, the Sooners have averaged 59 points a game in seven consecutive victories. Florida limited seven of its opponents to 10 points or less and only Mississippi (which handed the Gators their only setback) scored more than 21.
Florida won the national title two years ago with a one-sided victory over Ohio State. Oklahoma claimed its BCS championship over Florida State in 2001, but has since lost twice in the final game to USC and LSU.
Although the winner of Thursday's game will be declared NCAA champion, Sugar Bowl winner Utah (13-0) has finished the season as the only unbeaten team in the nation.
