CLEVELAND, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Recently fired New York Jets Coach Eric Mangini will be the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Wednesday.

The Browns issued a statement that said "an agreement has been reached" for Mangini to coach the team.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

The Jets fired Mangini last week after his team finished the season with a 9-7 record, missing the playoffs. Mangini's record in three years with the Jets was 23-25.

The 37-year-old Mangini replaces Romeo Crennel at Cleveland, which was 4-12 this season.

Mangini worked previously for the Browns. He was an assistant to former Cleveland Coach Bill Belichick in the mid-1990s and also on Belichick's staff with the New England Patriots (2000-04).
