
BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Last year's runner-up Victoria Azarenka and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli were Tuesday winners at the Brisbane International.
The Belarusian Azarenka, who lost to Chinese Na Li in last year's title match, defeated Slovakia's Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6 (7-4), 7-5) and third-seeded Bartoli, of France beat Hungarian qualifier Melinda Czink 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in second round play/
In other second-round action, Italian Tathiana Garbin defeated Russian Alisa Kleybanova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Czech Lucie Safarova beat Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-4.
Azarenka will face Safarova and Bartoli will play Garbin in quarterfinal play here on Thursday.
The second round will conclude here on Wednesday, including matches for top-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic and fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo. Ivanovic, reigning French Open champion, Aussie Open runner-up and former world No. 1 will play Italian Roberta Vinci and two-time major champion and former top-ranked Mauresmo will play fellow Frenchwoman Julie Coin
