CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Boston College, paced by 24 points from Tyreese Rice, upset top-ranked North Carolina 85-78 Sunday.
It was the Atlantic Coast Conference-opener for both schools.
Rice clearly won the battle of the ACC's top point guards by adding eight assists and five rebounds, while North Carolina's Ty Lawson scored 10 points with four assists and three rebounds.
BC held a 46-40 halftime lead, and maintained its composure when the Tar Heels closed to 58-56 with 12:29 left. Rice scored four points to help BC stretch its lead to 78-64 with 6:23 left.
Rakim Sanders scored 22 with six rebounds and Reggie Jackson scored 17 points for the Eagles (13-2, 1-0 ACC), who extended their winning streak to 10 games in a row.
Tyler Hansbrough led North Carolina with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Wayne Ellington scored 16 with five rebounds, while Danny Green added nine points and seven rebounds for the Tar Heels (13-1, 0-1).
