Report: Barry Bonds has hip surgery

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Slugger Barry Bonds has undergone hip surgery with thoughts of resuming his baseball career despite his legal troubles, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Baseball's all-time home run hitter missed the 2008 season when he was not signed by any major league team, but has said he is not retiring.

The newspaper reported Thursday that he could be healed by Opening Day next season.

Neither Dr. Arthur Ting, who performed the surgery, nor Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, would comment.

Bonds, 44, has hit 762 home runs, but last played in a game with San Francisco on Sept. 26, 2007, when he ended his 15-year tenure with the Giants.

He is accused of lying during 2003 grand jury testimony when he said he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs, and 10 of 14 counts for making false declarations to a federal grand jury and one count of obstruction of justice have been reduced.

His trial is set for March 2 in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
