Iowa star to enter the NFL draft

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Iowa running back Shonn Greene, the MVP Thursday in its 31-10 win over South Carolina at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, has decided to enter the 2009 NFL draft.

The junior tailback from Sicklerville, N.J., rushed for 121 yards on 29 carries and scored three times to finish his junior season at the Big Ten Conference school with 1,950 yards, second-best this season.

Before the contest, he won the Doak Walker award, symbolic of the nation's top running back.

"I wanted to get the win for the team," Greene told reporters after becoming the only running back this season to rush for at least 100 yards in every game. "I don't think there's a lot more I could do here, so I figure I'll try my chances in the NFL."

Greene's final contest in a Hawkeye uniform helped Iowa earn a 9-4 record, the fourth time in the last seven seasons it recorded nine or more victories.
