GLENDALE, Ariz., Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Peter Mueller scored twice in the second period to put Phoenix in front Wednesday and the Coyotes held off Colorado 3-1.
Mikael Tellqvist allowed a goal midway through the first period and was perfect the rest of the way while stopping 28 shots. He made 10 saves in the third period to hand the Avalanche their first loss in four games.
Phoenix has lost just twice in regulation during its last 11 outings (6-2-3). Olli Jokinen also scored for the Coyotes and Shane Doan had two assists.
The lone Colorado goal came from T.J. Hensick.
Mueller tied the game with 9:24 left in the second period by lifting the puck over a fallen Peter Budaj, who made 29 saves in defeat.
A wrist shot by Mueller 2 minutes later put Phoenix in front to stay.
