NASHVILLE, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Bryant Hahnfeldt kicked a 45-yard field goal with 3:26 to play Wednesday, giving Vanderbilt a 16-14 triumph over Boston College in the Music City Bowl.
The Commodores had not played in a bowl game in 26 years and had not won one in more than a half century.
Myron Lewis preserved the victory by intercepting a Dominique Davis pass with 1:36 to play and Vanderbilt was able to run out the clock. Vanderbilt's last bowl win was in 1955 -- a 25-13 victory over Auburn in the Gator Bowl.
Boston College (9-5) took a 14-13 lead with 6:38 to play on a 55-yard pass from Davis to Colin Larmond. Vanderbilt then marched from its own 24-yard line to the Boston College 29 before Hahnfeldt came on to kick the game-winning field goal.
Vanderbilt came into the game with a 6-6 record and was a decided underdog against the Eagles, who had won their eight previous bowl appearances. Their bowl winning streak had been the longest active such run of success in college football.
