SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Carlon Brown gave Utah a three-point lead with 19 seconds left Wednesday and the Utes survived a series of misses to surprise No. 16 Gonzaga 66-65.
After opening the season with seven straight wins, Gonzaga (8-4) has lost four out of five and three in a row.
A layup by Matt Bouldin brought Gonzaga within a point with 25 seconds to play, after which Brown made two free throws for a 66-63 Utah lead.
Steven Gray again cut the Gonzaga deficit to one by making two foul shots with 7.3 seconds to go and Bouldin then stole the inbound pass. Bouldin tried a quick jumper that failed to go and Austin Daye's tip-in attempt also missed before Luke Nevill grabbed the rebound for Utah as time expired.
Nevill led the Utes with 15 points and Luca Drca had 14.
Gray and Jeremy Pargo both scored 14 for Gonzaga. Utah, which scored the game's first nine points and led by 11 midway through the first half, improved to 8-5.
