
MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A career-high, 24-point effort from Kalin Lucas Wednesday helped carry No. 15 Michigan State to a 70-58 win over 21st-ranked Minnesota.
It was the first loss of the season for the Golden Gophers and came in the opening Big Ten Conference game of the campaign for both schools.
Chris Allen added 13 points for the Spartans and Goran Sutton had 11 points and 12 rebounds. It was Michigan State's sixth straight victory since the Spartans (10-2) took a 35-point pounding at the hands of No. 1 North Carolina.
Minnesota (12-1) had been off to its best start in 60 years. The Gophers were led by 14 points from Al Nolen.
Michigan State broke open a tie game in the early moments of the second half with an 8-0 run. The Spartans had another eight-point surge later in the half en route to a 60-45 advantage.
