NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- John Kasay's fourth field goal of the game, a 42-yarder with 1 second to play, gave Carolina the NFC South title Sunday with a 33-31 win over New Orleans.

Kasay also connected on kicks of 45, 26 and 34 yards.

DeAngelo Williams ran for 178 yards for the Panthers (12-4), who will get a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Carolina's Jake Delhomme completed 14-of-20 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown, Steve Smith had five receptions for 134 yards, Muhsin Muhammad caught a scoring pass and Jonathan Stewart ran 2 yards for a score.

Drew Brees threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns for New Orleans (8-8), which missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Brees is now second in all-time single-season passing yardage in the NFL. Brees accounted for 5,069 yards, trailing only former Miami Dolphin Dan Marino, who passed for 5,084 yards in 1984.
