CINCINNATI, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds signed Willy Taveras to a two-year contract Saturday, ending the team's search for a lead-off hitter and center fielder.
The financial terms of the contract were withheld, MLB.com reported.
Taveras, 27, was with the Colorado Rockies the past two seasons after three years with the Houston Astros. He became a free agent when the Rockies failed to arrange a trade.
In 2008, Taveras batted .251 in 133 games with an on-base percentage of .308. But he led both leagues in stolen bases, achieving 68 out of 75 for a percentage of .907.
In 2007, Taveras had a .320 batting average with an on-base percentage of .367. His career average is .283.
