PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Scott Hartnell's second hat trick this season Saturday fueled the Philadelphia Flyers' 7-1 rout of the Washington Capitals.

He scored three of Philadelphia's four goals in the third period, and also had one assist.

Jeff Carter had two goals and two assists, and Joffrey Lupul scored once.

Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 47 saves on 48 shots in the Flyers' sixth win in their last seven games. Niittymaki was peppered by 25 shots in the first period.

The 25 shots on net in the first period equaled a franchise record for the Capitals, set Feb. 3, 1998, against Tampa Bay.

Washington's lone goal was scored by Brooks Laich early in the third period.

Starting netminder Brent Johnson surrendered three goals on 15 shots.

Jose Theodore relieved him in the third period and was beaten four times on 15 shots for the Capitals, who had their five-game winning streak stopped.

On the power play, Philadelphia went 2-for-5, and Washington was 0-for-5.
