
OTTAWA, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Jason Smith's first goal this season lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 5-4 overtime win over Dallas Saturday night.
With the contest tied, 4-4, Smith launched a shot past Dallas goalie Marty Turco at 3:30 of the extra session.
Daniel Alfredsson, Antoine Vermette (power play), Jason Spezza (power play), and Alexandre Picard (power play) scored for Ottawa.
Filip Kuba, Nick Foligno and Mike Fisher all had two assists, while Martin Gerber was credited with 25 saves on 29 shots for the Senators, who had lost five of their previous six games.
Ottawa points' leader Dany Heatley has failed to score in six straight outings.
Dallas' Brad Richards had one goal and one assist. Matt Niskanen, Toby Petersen and Loui Eriksson also scored, with Eriksson's 18th goal at 14:26 of the third creating the 4-4 tie.
Turco yielded five goals on 33 shots for the Stars, who had won two straight.
On the power play, Ottawa went 3-for-6, while Dallas went 1-for-4.
