CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Josh Vaughan ran for 162 yards and a touchdown Friday, leading Richmond to a 24-7 victory over Montana and the Football Championship Subdivision title.

It was the first national crown in any sport for the Spiders.

Eric Ward threw for a touchdown and also caught a scoring pass on a trick play, helping Richmond finish the season with a 13-3 record.

The Spiders recorded seven quarterback sacks and produced a national championship in the first year on the job for Coach Mike London. He was a defensive back with the Spiders from 1979-1982.

Montana's Cole Bergquist threw for 267 yards, but suffered an interception.

The Grizzlies (14-2) had won 10 in a row coming into the title game.

Montana won the national championship in 1995 and 2001.
