RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Charles McFarland had 20 points and 14 rebounds Friday and No. 10 Wake Forest survived a stubborn effort by Richmond to pull out an 86-79 win.
Despite a 12-4 start, Wake's halftime advantage was just 37-35 after Richmond's Kevin Anderson scored six of his 21 points in the first half's final four minutes.
The seven-foot McFarland scored 14 points in the stanza, and dominated the glass at key moments the entire contest.
Jeff Teague scored a team-high 21 points with eight rebounds, and three assists. He scored four points in the final 1:43.
L.D. Williams and Al-Farouq Aminu added 14 points apiece for the unbeaten Demon Deacons (9-0), who improved on their best start since winning their first 11 games in the 2003-04 season.
The Spiders (5-5) got 18 points and three assists from David Gonzalvez, and 12 points with eight rebounds from Jarhon Giddings.
Richmond has split its last four contests.
