DETROIT, Minn., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Shortstop Adam Everett, who played for the Minnesota Twins last season, has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

The team, in making the announcement Monday, did not provide details of the contract, but it was reported to be worth about $1 million.

"We are pleased to add Adam Everett to the Tigers organization," said David Dombrowski, the team's president, chief executive officer and general manager.

"Improving our defense was a priority for our club this winter and we feel Adam is one of the top defensive shortstops in the game."

The 31-year-old Everett had a shoulder injury and played in just 48 games for the Twins during the 2008 season. He hit .213 with two home runs and 20 RBI.

An injury also shortened Everett's season in 2007. He appeared in 66 games that season with the Houston Astros.

Everett, a native of Georgia, has a career average of .246 with 37 homers and 234 RBI.
