CLEVELAND, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent right-hander Kerry Wood to a two-year contract.

The team said on its Web site following Saturday's signing that the 31-year-old Wood, who will be the Indians' closer, will be paid $20.5 million. He joined Cleveland after the Chicago Cubs dumped him following an injury-plagued 10-year tenure.

Right-shoulder problems limited him to 14 starts from 2005-07. When he returned to action, the Cubs made him their closer.

Wood went 5-4 last season with 34 saves and a 3.26 ERA. He walked 18 batters and struck out 84 in 66 1/3 innings.

"With what I've gone through and where I've come from and the way I threw the ball (last season), there was no doubt in my mind (a deal would get done)," Wood said.

He was the National League rookie of the year in 1998 after the Cubs made him the fourth overall draft pick three years earlier.

He has a 77-61 career record with a 3.65 ERA.
